Are we any nearer to a definition of an informal carer which goes beyond the case study? Well, three points stand out so far. An informal carer:
Performs certain services for someone else with whom they already have a relationship
Is not paid a wage for those services
Is responsible for the welfare of someone who needs extra help with daily living, because they are ill or otherwise disabled.
I can therefore put forward a definition of an informal carer as:a person who takes unpaid responsibility for the physical and/or mental well-being of someone who cannot perform the tasks of daily living unaided, because of illness or disability.
