Renounce self, O disciple !

I would behold thy glory ;

Renounce all the tendencies of self;

I would see thee as thou art.

Renounce all the passions and prejudices of self;

Master. He who rightly renounces,

Renounce all the errors and egotism of self;

Who humbly purges his heart of self,

Such is the true renunciation ;

Who diligently searches for Truth not for selfish

Such is the sacrifice which leads to enlightenment pleasures,

and peace.

He, my lonely one, shall find my Purity ;

Disciple. What, O Master! are the tendencies of the He, my faithful one, shall surely see my face, self ?

He, my chosen one, shall come to me at last.

Master. Lust and self-indulgence,

Disciple. Thou art my refuge and my dwelling-

Self - seeking and avarice,

place ;

Hatred and anger,

My eyes, I know, will rest on thee at last ;

Vanity and pride,

My heart at last will stay itself on thee.

Doubt and fear?

Show me the highest and holiest way,

These are the tendencies of self;

Even the stainless way of Purity.

These are the things that must be renounced

Master. Thou art ready to be washed free from thy

; Disciple. And these things, O spirit immaculate ! I

defilements ;

I followed self, but it was filled with pain;

As a vessel thou art ready to be cleansed ;

I followed the world but it was fraught with heavy

And when thou art cleansed thou shalt be filled

sorrow ;

with the pure Water of Truth.

But now, O Master of Truth I follow thee,

By these four things is the heart defiled?

And thou art leading me to bliss unspeakable ;

The craving for pleasures,

Thou directest my steps into the way of purity and

The clinging to temporal things,

peace.

The love of self,

Master. Be strenuous in effort,

The lust for personal continuance:

Strong in resolution ;

From these four defilements spring all sins and

Patient in endurance;

sorrows Wash thou thy heart ;

So wilt thou overcome all sin;

Put away sensual cravings ;

Thou wilt become divinely pure;

Detach the mind from the wish for possession;

Sorrow and pain thou wilt altogether subdue

Abandon self defence and self-importance ;

And thou wilt acquire joy and strength and

And do not long for personal immortality.

equanimity.

Thus putting away all cravings, thou wilt attain to

satisfaction;

6. Of Righteousness

Detaching thy mind from the love of perishable

Master. Stand up, Son of Light I and put on the

things, thou wilt acquire wisdom;

garment of righteousness ;

Abandoning the thought of self, thou wilt come to Rejoice ! and enter the glad way of holiness ; peace ;

Open thine eyes, and behold the glory of Truth;

And not lusting for eternal life, thou wilt realise the For thou hast been faithful and obedient; incorruptible Truth.

Thou hast been patient and enduring ;

He is pure who is free from desire ;

Thou hast conquered and overcome.

Who does not crave for sensual excitements ;

The Great Enemy, even self, thou hast slain;
